The Graduate Program in Computational and Systems Biology of the Instituto Oswaldo Cruz (PGBCS/IOC/Fiocruz), created in 2007 and qualified with grade 5 by Coordenação de aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior (CAPES) (Brazilian Federal Agency for Support and Evaluation of Graduate Education - Capes/MEC), is allocated in the Interdisciplinary Area of Capes. The first classes started in 2008.
The program emerged from the concentration area of the Graduate Program in Molecular and Cellular Biology of the Instituto Oswaldo Cruz (PGBCM/IOC/Fiocruz), created in 2003. The intention was to structure the teaching of mathematical and computational techniques at the Institute. However, the program was restructured two years later, extinguishing the concentration area.
In this context, the discussion for the creation of a Graduate Program with this bias was resumed ending in the establishment of the PGBCS and its consequent accreditation in 2007. The implementation of the program had the support and the participation of professors from different Graduate Programs from IOC, from the Scientific Computational Program - Fiocruz and several institutions such as the Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro, Instituto Militar de Engenharia, Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Rio de Janeiro and the Laboratório Nacional de Computação Científica do Ministério da Ciência e Tecnologia (MCT).
The program is destined to high-level professionals from courses in exact sciences, health sciences or biological sciences interested in the study of biological problems at different scales and complexity levels within the computational biology and systems biology. The program presents three concentration areas: Structural Molecular Biology; Functional Genomics, Evolution and Phylogenomic; and Information Systems and Mathematical, Statistical, and Computational Methods.
The PGBCS differs from other Graduate Programs of Fiocruz, because its proposal is to maximize interactions and collaborations between the different areas of biological sciences, engineering, and exact sciences, aimed at the interdisciplinary training of students. The Program focuses on the potential hybridity of its profile. The diversity of advisors enhances the generation of interdisciplinary projects and stimulates collaborations with novel components.
It is expected that the graduates from PGBCS (M.Sc and Ph.D.) can understand and have critical thoughts in relation to the scientific production in computational and systems biology; maintain a comprehensive and interdisciplinary approach in both operational areas or other related scientific ones; conducting innovative and excellent scientific research; formulate, plan, develop and evaluate research projects, new methodologies, and products to work in research or production sectors; to prepare and publishing scientific articles in qualified scientific journals and in the operating areas of the Program.
